Cha finds a shop selling unique silver jewellery.
There are a lot of silver jewellery shops in Thailand. I regularly go to the Chatuchak Weekend Market, MBK Centre, the Chiang Mai Walking Street and other shopping places to see what’s new.
The jewellery business is having trouble right now because of the high prices of gold and silver. Many are losing business because clients don’t have enough money to pay for even small pieces. Design is therefore becoming more important as competition is getting harder and harder.
Traditional Thai designs are easy to find, but it is difficult to find shops where there is innovative Thai design. I recently came across Keith and Kym in Terminal 21 shopping centre. Their designs are one-off and so there is a great deal of exclusivity. The prices are good, considering how much the raw materials cost nowadays.
My favourite piece was a traditional lotus-headed bracelet that people would generally slip on as a bangle. The difference is that at Keith & Kym the bracelet opens to make it easy to put on and take off. It also makes it so that the lotus shapes are closer together than usual.
There are many other designs at Keith & Kym that take jewellery we see in many shops and add an interesting twist to them.
